Creation Notes:

Watercourse Way is a bathhouse and spa in my home town, where we go sometimes to get massages, or spend a serene hour soaking in a hot tub. Just walking in the door of the lobby is relaxing — you’re surrounded by rich woods and stone, hand-crafted furnishings made by skilled artisans. If I had gobs of money to spend on decorating, I’d hire whomever was in charge of the interiors here!

Each of the tub rooms has its own, unique decoration scheme, and one of the rooms has a large painting that has always intrigued me. The last time I was there I could not take my eyes off of it, and decided to borrow from its color scheme and elements when I next sat down to paint.

This piece has since spawned a series of works that branch off down new paths from the original source inspiration.

I confess I felt rather weird about drawing inspiration so directly from someone else’s art. In the East, an artist is expected to copy the works of master artists for many years before claiming their own voice, but this practice tends to be frowned upon in the individualistic West. In fact, though, trying on the voices of others is one way we find our own voice.

Writes T.S. Eliot, “Immature poets imitate; mature poets steal; bad poets deface what they take, and good poets make it into something better, or at least something different.”
