Rangoon – Abstract Expressionist Painting, 4×6
Acrylic & water soluble pencil on canvas
4″ x 6″ x 1 1/2″
One of the challenges of working with acrylic paints is getting the colors you want, where you want them. Often I work “wet in wet,” allowing the colors to blend on the canvas while I’m painting.
Sometimes they blend more than I want them to, or in ways I wouldn’t expect. Sometimes it results in intriguing, streaky brush strokes, as with this piece.
Defining edges with my trusty Derwent water soluble graphite pencil (thanks to Ruth Yuhas, who turned me on to this tool) has a way of bringing a piece together that I really love.
This piece reminds me of stained glass, streaked with rain, perhaps on a cold day. But there’s warmth, too — a glowing sun-like shape rising (or setting?) at the upper left.
What do you see in it?
