Dance at Dawn – Abstract Expressionist Painting, 4×6
Acrylic on canvas
4″ x 6″ x 1 1/2″
Often a piece will go through many iterations before I call it done. If I remember correctly, at one point this piece was all walnut ink and blue Ziller ink.
It sat in a cupboard for at least a year before I decided to move forward with it. Adding new layers of gesso, paint, collage, or mediums can transform a canvas, which is what happened here. At one point it looked like this, but then I decided I didn’t like that, so smeared away the black marks, which added some unexpected additional depth to the textures and colors.
This is what I love about working improvisationally! I never know what is going to emerge, and that’s the fun of it.
